What Environmental Factors May Contribute to Infertility?

    Last updated 5 months ago

There are several known facilitators of infertility, not all of which have to do with physical anomalies and disease. In fact, there are a number of infertility-encouraging factors that may be found in your everyday environment.

Read below for a categorized list of toxins, chemicals, and other factors that may be found in work, home, or outdoor environments, and find out how they can affect the fertility rates in both males and females.

    • Mineral Agents—Minerals, such as cadmium, manganese, and lead, have been found to interfere with the reproductive success of both men and women. Lead is especially dangerous to those hoping to conceive, as exposure through paint, batteries, PVC plastic, print ink, and jewelry have been known to cause miscarriages in women and low sperm count in men.
    • Continuous Heat—Heat has been shown to negatively affect sperm longevity. While damaging sources of heat can be found within the body in the form of varicose veins or fever, research has also indicated that external heat provided by hot tubs over ninety-six degrees in temperature can have an adverse effect on the sperm quality of would-be fathers.
    • Radiation Exposure—Repeated and/or prolonged exposure to radiation has also been proven to alter the male body’s ability to produce viable sperm, as well as the female body’s ability to maintain proper ovarian health. Patients exposed to small amounts of radiation over a great deal of time, either at their home or work, as well as those who undergo radiation treatments for cancer, may discover that they have fertility problems.
    • Pesticide Chemicals—Chemicals, like ethylene oxide and dibromochloropropane, that are found in some pesticides affect hormone levels of both men and women, and directly damage any eggs that may have become fertilized. Those who are exposed to such chemicals may find themselves suffering from a spontaneous miscarriage or a low sperm or egg count.

Would you like to know more about these infertility-causing environmental factors or others you may have read about during your own personal research?

If so, call the Arizona Associates for Reproductive Health at (602) 910-2684, and we can speak with you about any exposures you feel may have put you at risk for infertility.
